Cowichan District Hospital Site Development

Cowichan District Hospital (CDH) Master Site Plan

This document was prepared by IBI+HDR and summarizes the current conditions at CDH, as well as the "right size" for 2015 and 2020. The document was prepared based on capacity analysis, on-site meetings and other data provided.

The volume data is largely based on the Role and Scope of Services document prepared by Kines Consulting Group. The Role and Scope report was commissioned to ensure that the services provided at CDH are still appropriate and to forecast the service needs associated with changing local needs, growth and evolving best practices.

The inpatient bed targets were based on the VIHA Acute Care Forecasting Model. This Model is based on the following:

  • population growth
  • demographic changes
  • evolving best practices, and
  • the enhancement of non-hospital based services to meet local needs across the continuum of care.

Note: This draft does not include detailed information on obstetrics and paediatrics. These details will be provided when available.

Next Steps

The next step for IBI+HDR is to synthesize the "right size" needs with existing building spaces and identify possible scenarios to develop facilities to meet these needs.

This is done using "blocks of space", with more detailed functional programs for specific areas to be developed later as projects are identified.
