General Counsel & Chief, Enterprise Risk and Corporate Governance
As General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer of Island Health, Carla provides strategic leadership for Island Health’s Enterprise Risk Management, Emergency Management, Privacy, Policy Stewardship and Legal Services portfolios. Carla also provides strategic governance support and leads the secretariat services to the Board of Directors. Carla chairs the meetings of the Executive Leadership Team and the Executive Steering Committee, is an advisory member of HAMAC, and is helping the organization create an enterprise-wide risk perspective to influence broad and impactful decision making for effective governance and stewardship of resources at all levels of the organization.
Carla began her legal career in the securities and corporate finance group of Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP before joining Suncor Energy Inc. and later building the Corporate Secretarial department of Cenovus Energy Inc. after its split from Encana Corporation, advising on board and corporate governance, securities reporting and compliance and tax transactions.
Carla prides herself on creating an empowered work environment for her team to embrace and define their professional development in a way that captures the needs of the organization while providing personal fulfillment and growth.
In her spare time, Carla volunteers extensively in the local soccer community, coaching three teams and co-founding and coaching with Island Fire, a grass roots not-for-profit soccer program for girls in the greater-Victoria area.
