Catherine Mackay has served Island Health as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since February 2010.
In partnership with the Vice President – Medicine, Quality & Academic Affairs, Catherine co-leads operations within Island Health’s four geographies and three portfolios. Together the Vice Presidents provide co-leadership in all aspects of planning, operations and evaluation of health service programs.
An experienced healthcare executive with over 20 years of progressive leadership experience, Catherine’s previous roles included Executive Director of High Intensity and Rehabilitation Services, Director of Emergency Services and Manager of Renal Services. Prior to this, her career included nursing and front line leadership roles in emergency and intensive care in Vancouver, Saskatoon and Victoria.
A registered nurse since graduating from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1982, Catherine went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Nursing by 1991, when she began to move her career in the direction of administrative leadership. She has worked for the Ministry of Health, instructed students at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, as well as provided clinical lectures at the University of Victoria.
