Interim Vice President – People & Experience

Dr. Elin Bjarnason came to Island Health in 1986 from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

As Interim Vice President - People & Experience, Elin provides strategic leadership to enhance the patient and family experience and promote employee and medical staff engagement in order to achieve excellence in health and care.  Elin’s leadership of this portfolio is a continuation of her duties as Interim Executive Vice President Quality, Safety and Experience.

Under Elin’s leadership, the People & Experience portfolio engages patients and families as partners in health and care alongside volunteers, employees and medical staff to achieve superior clinical quality and service excellence.

Elin’s role encompasses responsibility and accountability for, Patient and Employee Experience, Occupational Health & Safety, Professional Practice, Human Resources, Learning and Performance Support, and Organizational Development in Island Health.

Elin has over 30 years of health-care clinical and leadership experience.  A continual learner, Elin has a degree in physiotherapy, is a licensed Doctor of Chinese Medicine, and in 2014 obtained her Executive Masters in Business Administration specializing in Healthcare. 

Prior to Elin’s role as Interim Executive Vice President Quality Safety and Experience she held various Executive Director and Director roles as well as Site Administration roles for Island Health, and most recently was Executive Director and co-Lead for Geography 4 and for a number of island wide operational and quality programs. Elin’s strengths are her passion for patients as partners in care, her extensive cross-continuum experience, well-honed systems thinking perspective, and a solid track record of bringing diverse shareholders together to effectively deliver on strategic priorities.
