“We are committed to providing residents with relevant information that will help them live their healthiest lives,” says Toni O'Keeffe, Island Health Vice President and Chief, Communications and Public Relations. “Island Health magazine is just one of the tools we use to deliver that information. As our population ages and we see increased numbers of patients with chronic disease, we know we have to partner differently with communities and citizens to keep people healthy and out of the hospital.”
The first award for the magazine is the 2016 Gold Quill Award of Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). IABC is one of the most widely recognized and respected business associations in the world. The program recognizes business communication excellence globally, and is acknowledged as one of the most prestigious awards programs in the industry.
The second is a Platinum Award - the highest award category - at the Hermes international awards competition, where the publication competed with more than 6,000 other entries.
“Island Health magazine is produced in-house by our communications and public relations team,” O'Keeffe says. “Magazine editor Susan Evans and designer Jen Morgan do an outstanding job working with our clinical areas and public health to create a publication that provides information related to managing health, coping with illness, seasonal health and wellness tips as well as information on the programs and services available to residents of Island Health's region.”
According to IABC judges, Island Health magazine delivers: “A well thought out magazine that has a clear focus on its target audience. Lots of useful information in a reader-friendly format. The lively magazine format is well designed, using clear language and good graphics to provide relevant content.”
Island Health magazine current and past issues can be found online at www.viha.ca/magazine. Print copies are available throughout the region at Island Health facilities, libraries, community and recreation centres, grocery stores and malls.
Island Health is also undergoing a complete website redesign to further improve public access to important information about health management and health services.
