VICTORIA - The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) has announced that it will conduct a health needs assessment for Saltspring Island this fall.
"Saltspring Islanders are served by an excellent hospital and medical staff," said Howard Waldner, VIHA President and CEO. "We will be undertaking an assessment of the health status of the population to ensure we are providing services that meet the needs of all members of the Saltspring Island community."
This review will be lead by VIHA's Regional Director for Planning and Community Engagement, Grant Hollett, and will include members of the Saltspring Island community. The review will examine the population and current services that are offered at Lady Minto Hospital in Ganges and other community services available on the Island. The review is expected to be completed by December 31st and will be made public.
"We know that there are a wide number of issues that need to be addressed to improve the health of the community, from mental health and addiction issues to seniors care," said Waldner. "This review will help us provide better care today and plan sustainable services for the future."
This review does not preclude any service from being offered at Lady Minto Hospital.
"We know that the community values the surgical procedures at Lady Minto Hospital and VIHA continues to explore options to provide surgical services on Saltspring Island," said Waldner. "We are confident that this review will provide a roadmap that will continue to allow us to provide high quality health care for Island residents."
