VICTORIA – The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s Infection Prevention and Control Program has declared both the Norovirus and the respiratory illness outbreaks at Glengarry Hospital’s Chandler Unit over.
The Norovirus outbreak at Chandler was declared on April 6 and affected a total of 39 residents. The respiratory outbreak was first declared on April 22 after an increase in the number of cases and several deaths occurred at the Chandler Unit. On April 29, two residents on the Fairfield Unit also became ill with respiratory symptoms.
Infection control measures remain in place on the Fairfield Unit, and the outbreak status will be reviewed on a daily basis. No new cases of respiratory illness have occurred on Fairfield since last Thursday, April 29.
A total of 21 residents at Glengarry Hospital (19 at Chandler Unit and 2 at Fairfield Unit) were affected by a respiratory illness. Of these 21 individuals, 10 have died (9 on Chandler, 1 on Fairfield). Three staff members also experienced respiratory symptoms.
The cause of the respiratory illness is still under investigation with tests ongoing at the BC Centre for Disease Control.
