Rumours of B Negative Blood Shortage At VGH Inacurrate

September 29, 2010

VICTORIA -- The Vancouver Island Health Authority wishes to set the record straight on inaccurate information currently circulating on Facebook, Twitter and UsedVictoria that is asking for B Negative blood for a child at Victoria General Hospital.

The postings have resulted in numerous public calls to the paediatric unit, which is diverting staff time and impacting patient care.

Victoria General Hospital does not have a child in care who requires this type of blood, and the information seeking this blood type is not accurate.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority would never issue a call for a specific blood type using social media only.  If a particular rare blood type was needed, VIHA Transfusion Medicine Laboratory would work directly with Canadian Blood Services to secure the correct type of blood.

VIHA does not know the origin of this incorrect information.
