Juan de Fuca Hospital Auxiliary Celebrates 40 Years

May 12, 2010

VICTORIA – The Juan de Fuca Hospitals’ Auxiliary Association is celebrating its 40th year of operation this year.  The Auxiliary works in cooperation with the Vancouver Island Health Authority at four residential Care sites in Greater Victoria: Aberdeen, the Priory, Mt. Tolmie and Glengarry Hospitals.

“The Juan de Fuca Hospitals’ Auxiliary has played, and continues to play an important role in health care throughout Greater Victoria,” said VIHA Board Chair Jac Kreut.  “On behalf of the Board of VIHA, I would like to congratulate them for 40 years of outstanding service, and look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

The Auxiliary operates Gift Shops at the four residential care sites and they organize fundraising events and activities to benefit seniors in care.

Established in 1970 as the Women’s Auxiliary to St. Mary’s Priory, the Auxiliary has had hundreds of volunteers raise funds for several projects, including buses for transporting patients, equipment and comfort items for residents and activities to help keep residents active. Last year, the Auxiliary donated $20,000 towards the building of Auxiliary Walk, a safe walking path among the gardens for residents of the Priory. It is estimated that the Auxiliary has raised well over $1 million since it first came into service.

“The world has changed a lot in the last 40 years,” said Tom Thomas, president of the JDFAA.  “But, through our dedicated volunteers, we continue to do what we can to help the care and comfort for the residents of the facilities we serve.”

A celebration honouring Auxiliary members and alumni was held today at Hillside Unit at Aberdeen Hospital to mark this momentous occasion.
