VIHA Response to Migrant Ship Humanitarian Emergency

August 13, 2010

VICTORIA – The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) began receiving patients from the MV Sun Sea earlier today.  At this time, we can confirm only that there are a small number of patients and the majority are expected to be discharged.  There has been no impact on services to the public.

VIHA is not in a position to provide exact numbers or patients or any details regarding the health condition or profile of these patients, as the situation continues to evolve.

The federal government has a leadership role in responding to this issue and, as such, they will release more information about the people on board the MV Sun Sea in the days to come.

VIHA would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their professionalism and support in responding to this humanitarian emergency health response.
