The opening was celebrated today by Murray Coell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands and Ida Chong, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head at the official “ribbon-cutting” ceremony. The new operating suite is a 690 square metre addition to the hospital and includes three new operating rooms and an endoscopy/integrated procedure room.
“With the opening of the new operating rooms, Saanich Peninsula Hospital will be well positioned to meet the health care needs of South Island families now and in the future,” said Coell on behalf of Health Minister Michael de Jong. “The Government of British Columbia is pleased to have invested $2.9 million in the renovation and upgrade and we thank the many generous donors and community members who have raised millions to support this project.”
The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation contributed over $5 million towards this project through fundraising efforts in a very generous community.
“The new operating rooms at Saanich Peninsula Hospital are welcome news for families in the region and, in conjunction with the significant upgrades at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals, will help ensure that we continue to provide the care Island patients need,” said Chong.
“Residents of the Saanich Peninsula have expressed tremendous support for this project,” said Lorne Jack, SPH Foundation President. “Providing $5.2 million for construction and equipment is a remarkable achievement for us and we are so pleased to have modern and up-to-date operating rooms in our hospital.”
In addition to the financial contributions by the province and the Foundation, the Capital Regional Hospital District (CRHD) also contributed $1.8 million for the operating suite construction and electrical system upgrades.
“The Capital Regional Hospital District is proud to join our community partners in the significant redevelopment of the operating rooms at Saanich Peninsula Hospital,” said CRHD Vice Chair Geoff Young. “This capital investment reflects the commitment of the Hospital District to ensuring the availability of quality healthcare and the best facilities possible for all residents of the Region.”
“VIHA recognizes Saanich Peninsula Hospital as a unique community hospital integrated within our South Island Hospital Network,” noted Don Hubbard, VIHA’s Board Chair. “New operating rooms enable this hospital to meet increasing future demands, and support our South Island health services.”
The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for consultants in June 2009 and an Invitation to Bid for contractors in May 2011 for upgrades to the operating rooms. The $4.3 million contract for the operating rooms was awarded to Kinetic Construction Ltd. Through a separate RFP process, a $5.6 million upgrade to the hospital’s electrical system was completed in June 2012.
