NANAIMO – Police were called to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s psychiatric unit on October 13, 2009 to assist staff who were dealing with a patient armed with a pellet pistol.
This resulted in two Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) employees (a protection services officer and a nurse) becoming slightly injured in the incident. They were attended to in the emergency department and released.
Patients are free to come and go from the unit, depending upon their clinical situations.
Support is being offered to staff who were present at the time, and to any patients who may have witnessed the event.
RCMP were immediately called to the scene and are conducting an investigation with full cooperation from VIHA. VIHA is also reviewing the incident to ensure that all protocols were followed appropriately.
VIHA is thankful that no serious injuries occurred in this incident. VIHA has a zero tolerance policy towards workplace violence, and that includes violence from patients or clients towards staff.
