“The expansion of the emergency department, which includes the addition of treatment rooms, will help ensure the hospital can keep up with the growing demand,” said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. “This is a true partnership with the Province, hospital foundation and regional hospital district all contributing to the $36.9 million cost.”
CMF Construction Ltd. Is part of the Nanaimo-based GW Carlson Group of Companies with over 40 years of experience in the construction industry.
“This is an exciting project and we look forward to working closely with this local general contractor, and are also pleased that the mechanical and electrical sub-trades, Torry and Sons Mechanical and Houle Electric, also locally based, will also be working on this project”, said Jac Kreut, VIHA Board Chair.
This announcement comes following an Invitation to Bid that was issued on June 15th, 2010.
The Emergency Department project, estimated at $36.9 million, will more than double the size of the ED. Treatment rooms will increase from 24 to 41 and will be able to handle the growing patient volumes seen at this busy Emergency Department. The design is aiming for Leed Gold environmental standard.
The construction of a new roadway and parking lot are nearing completion, making way for construction to begin.
The provincial share of the $36.9 million is $20.1 million with the remaining funding coming from other sources, including the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District and the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation.
“The new Emergency Department at NRGH is going to be a huge benefit for our region and we are glad to see this important project moving forward”, said NRHD Chair, Joe Stanhope.
“The Foundation is committed to raising $4 million for essential equipment in the new Emergency Department and donors have already begun to respond with great generosity, said Leslie Sundby, Chair, Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. “We look forward to facilitating community support of this expansion.”
We anticipate breaking ground for this project late September 2010 with occupancy anticipated around September 2012. Watch for regular updates posted our web site at www.viha.ca.
