June 15, 2010
NANAIMO – The Vancouver Island Health Authority today issued an Invitation to Bid (ITB) for General Contractors to replace the Emergency Department (ED) and to include dedicated mental health services.

The ITB is posted on the BCBID website, www.bcbid.ca  (BC Bid #09FPNH41-ITB)

"This is an exciting step in expanding patient care in the Nanaimo area," said Nanaimo-Parksville MLA Ron Cantelon. "By replacing and expanding the Emergency Department, and including dedicated emergency mental health services, residents in the Central Island area will be well-served.”

The project, currently estimated at $36.9M, will more than double the size of the ED from 875 square meters to 3,247 square meters, plus an additional 3,166 square meters at the basement level for office and storage space.  Treatment rooms will increase from 24 to 41 and the sustainable design is aiming for LEED Gold.

“The Vancouver Island Health Authority is committed to continue to enhance Nanaimo Regional General Hospital as a regional referral centre, and this exciting project supports that commitment,” said Jac Kreut, VIHA Board Chair.

Currently on site at NRGH a new roadway and parking lot are being completed making way for the construction to begin.

The ITB closes on July 22, 2010 with a plan to begin excavation work in September, and occupancy planned for September 2012.
