Islanders Urged to Prepare for Potential Flooding

January 7, 2009
The BC River Forecast Centre advises that heavy rainfall is expected to continue today on West Vancouver Island, with an additional 40-60mm expected.  The system that began yesterday has already resulted in upwards of 80mm of rain on the west coast of the Island, and between 40-70mm on Central Vancouver Island. Environment Canada forecasts the rains will ease Thursday morning. However, these rains, combined with snowmelt, will raise river levels and may result in localized flooding. Larger rivers (Nanaimo, Cowichan, etc.) are not expected to flood, but peak snowmelt combined with high tide at 4 am on Thursday may create some urban flooding issues. The Vancouver Island Health Authority advises residents to prepare for potential flooding. Read More (PDF)
