Authority Wide – The recent cold snap has created a potential for dangerous, icy conditions on our sidewalks and roadways, especially if we receive any precipitation in the coming days.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority advises seniors to be especially cautious if they venture outdoors.
Many seniors rely on others coming to assist them with healthcare or domestic tasks. Please make sure that sidewalks are clear and de-iced so that seniors and other shut-ins are able to receive the assistance that they rely upon.
To reduce your risk of falling in icy weather:
-
Sprinkle sand or salt around your home and on sidewalks to improve traction.
-
Keep walks shoveled so that people can come and go from the property, especially in the case of seniors requiring assistance.
-
If you live in an apartment or complex, speak with your property manager if the property needs attention to keep walkways safe.
-
Walk slowly and pay attention to where you are going.
-
Postpone non-essential trips if possible.
-
Wear proper fitting, supportive footwear appropriate to the weather.
-
Use extra caution when entering or exiting a vehicle.
-
Use a walking aid as ordered for you by a health professional.
-
Remove reading glasses while walking.
