The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s (VIHA) Mental Health and Substance Use program has three focus areas and priorities for patients, families and health care providers over the next three years:

Since the Fall of 2009, the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) has been working in partnership with the Cowichan Communities Health Network to identify options for the future of the Cowichan Lodge facility. The Cowichan Communities Health Network is made up of representatives from non‐profit groups, local government, community service providers, First Nations and other stakeholders. Between April 1st 2011 and March 31st 2012, Westech conducted independent audits of the Fraser, Interior, Provincial, Vancouver Coastal, Northern and Vancouver Island Health Authorities in British Columbia to ensure that they are consistent with industry best practices. The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) recognizes community concerns around access to, and availability of, health care series in Mt. Waddington. VIHA met with local physicians, local governments, the Mt. Waddington Health Network and other stakeholders in Fall 2011. VIHA’s Quality Improvement review into the death of a 16-year old inpatient at Ledger House (located at the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health) in December 2010 has concluded. The review contains seven recommendations. The table on the following pages lists the recommendations of the VIHA review and the health authority’s response and actions to each recommendation.
