April 1, 2008 -Breastcancernowwhat.ca connects young women to a network of support

Canada's first interactive website for young women with breast cancer, breastcancernowwhat.ca, was officially launched today, connecting young women with a group of supportive women who've "been there" and offering empathy, information and sense of community they need throughout their diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Breastcancernowwhat.ca's private discussion boards are available 24/7. The website also links to a real-time online support group, hosts regular "Ask the Expert" chats on topics such as fertility, parenting, sexuality and nutrition and offers medical information from the BC Cancer Agency.

The website has been developed by a group of young B.C. women who have been through breast cancer and struggled to find the support they needed to parent their children, talk with their partners, find support for themselves and loved ones in dealing with their diagnoses and make treatment decisions that possibly affected their fertility.

Receiving psychosocial support before, during and after cancer treatment is recognized by health professionals as an essential component of healing. The website creators knew there was a need for emotional support in a caring, safe environment and a huge opportunity to assist other young women.
