Steve Sxwithul’txw

Raised on Vancouver Island and a proud member of the Penelakut Tribe, Steve Sxwithul’txw has a diverse background. He has worked for many different agencies to enhance his abilities in working with First Nations. He worked for the First Nations Health Council as an Aboriginal Recruitment Officer promoting health careers in BC’s First Nations communities. This provided Aboriginal youth and adults the tools to achieve their health career goals.  Steve also worked for the First Nations Education Steering Committee in communications and health recruiting for Aboriginal youth.
 
A former police officer, Steve went back to school in 2005 to attain a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from BCIT. He then worked for both CTV and CBC in Vancouver as a producer and reporter. In addition to his duties at VIHA, Steve hosts an Aboriginal Peoples Television Network TV show called “Down2Earth” and is now the host of his own show coming in 2013 called “Warrior Games”, also on APTN.

His goals at VIHA in Aboriginal Recruitment and Retention are well defined:

  • Informing Aboriginal youth and young adults about the full spectrum of careers in healthcare,
  • Attracting currently trained Aboriginal healthcare professionals and job seekers to join VIHA,
  • Influencing VIHA’s organizational culture in ways that support the retention of current Aboriginal employees.
