Job Summary

The Adult Mental Health and Substance Use Services for North Island, in Comox/Campbell River has an opening for an exceptional candidate to join our highly collegial and progressive team.

In this position the successful candidate will provide:

Rapid Access Psychiatric Consultation: Within less than a week for follow-up of ER presentations. Psychiatric care will be limited to 1 to 3 visits to provide a meaningful care strategy and connection to follow-up services in the community. The service augments discharge care in the short term, expediting earlier discharges and facilitating return to patient’s community and support system while having ongoing follow-up.  Additionally, it provides non-urgent consultative care 5 days/week for psychiatric patients admitted to seclusion and non-seclusion ER beds. These consults may result in patients being discharged to the community with appropriate follow-up or facilitate treatment and care planning as patients await admission to a psychiatric bed within Island Health. All admitted patients will have an assigned MRP for continuity of care prior to consultative input by the psychiatrist. This service requires triage of cases facilitated by the crisis nurses and referrals coming from ER physicians. The psychiatrist will collaborate with MHSU staff for continuity of care.

Consultation Liaison: Receives referrals from GP’s and specialists on inpatients in medicine/surgery/obs/gyn who require psychiatric assessment. The Rapid Access and CL position is shared with another psychiatrist.

Collaborative Care Consultation: Provides semi-urgent and ambulatory psychiatric service. An initial psychiatric consultation with some limited option to provide longer term follow-up will be offered. The referrals will be from Primary Care providers.

MHSU & Outreach in Person and via Telehealth: The successful candidate will work with community teams providing consultations and follow-up and leadership with clinical teams as they continue to grow. These teams include the ACT (Assertive Community Treatment), ICT (Integrated  Community Treatment) as well as ACS and ASTAT teams. It would include young adult patients with chronic and persistent mental illness who are transitioning from child and adolescent services to adult  services. The practice is both in Campbell River as well as some rural and remote visits both in-person and via Telehealth.
