Nanaimo, population 85,000, is a growing and vibrant urban center situated on the east coast of Vancouver Island, located approximately 100 kilometers north of Victoria and offers excellent access via commercial flights, float plane or ferry to Vancouver.  The community offers a wide variety of cultural and educational opportunities including the 800 seat waterfront Port Theatre, the Vancouver Island University and is adjacent renowned private schools.

Nanaimo is the outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise, providing year round access to a wide array of recreational activities including kayaking, kite boarding, windsurfing, mountain-biking, hiking, running and golfing.  Nearby Mount Washington frequently boasting the deepest snow pack in North America, has excellent downhill, snowboarding and cross country skiing.

Job Summary

The Division of Infectious Disease of Island Health seeks an energetic and dedicated full-time adult infectious disease consultant to join five other ID specialists on Vancouver Island.  Situated in central island, Nanaimo currently has one other ID specialist and requires growth to service the growing local population and provide care to the surrounding communities in central and north island.   

Clinical service requirements include consultation and case management for a broad array of infectious disease problems at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) and surrounding community.  Local services include an OPAT clinic and a Home IV program.  Opportunities to provide care and further develop programs for regional hospitals via telehealth and a combined Island wide consultation service exist.   

In addition to participation in the infectious disease call rota the provision of general Internal Medicine call is required to cover 4 days per month at NRGH. 

Candidates should be interested in providing acute care consultation and management of adult infectious diseases, as well as assist in further developing local and regional ID services to support the growing population.  Antibiotic stewardship expertise will be considered an asset.


Education, Training and Experience

• FRCPC in Infectious Diseases
• Eligible for full licensure from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC
