Community Information

The Comox Valley is Vancouver Island’s hidden gem. Located on the West coast of the Salish Sea, half way up the Island, the Comox Valley includes the towns of Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland which together have an immediate catchment of almost 70,000 people.   The new hospital is located in Courtenay, just 10 minutes from sandy ocean beach, 15 minutes from the world class Cumberland mountain biking trails, 35 minutes from the Mount Washington ski resort and 1 hour from Nanaimo.  The Comox Valley also has a thriving airport with direct flights to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and seasonal flights to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico,  There is scope here to tailor your practice to your stage of life, family situation, and desired lifestyle.

In addition to regional big box stores, our three downtown cores are filled with trendy shops, restaurants and brew pubs.  The weekly farmer’s market offers access to live entertainment and locally grown produce.  In comparison to nearby cities, housing remains affordable with access to both French and English schools and high quality day care. The Comox Valley is truly an excellent place to live and work.

Job Summary

Comox Valley Hospital is seeking two full time General Internal Medicine specialists with the skills to manage critically ill patients in a community ICU setting.  Applicants must hold Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) certification or equivalent, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Comox Valley Hospital is a brand new 154 bed acute care facility, managed by the Vancouver Island Health Authority.  This new facility has 45 additional beds to accommodate the recent increase in population and includes an 8-bed ICU and a 10-bed telemetry unit.  In order to support this demand, the Comox Valley Hospital is looking to expand local internal medicine and critical care capacity.

Comox Valley Hospital is a medium sized community hospital located in the beautiful Comox Valley.  It is recognized as a leader in clinician collaboration and was awarded “Accreditation with Exemplary Standing" by Accreditation Canada in 2011.  Applicants must demonstrate experience as well as comfort working as part of an integrated care team with other hospital-focused specialist physicians and support colleagues, family physicians and nurses.

Successful applicants will join a collegial group of internists including an intensivist, respirologist, hematologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist and two general internists.  We are concurrently advertising for additional positions in order to bring the internal medicine group to 10 physicians.  Clinical duties will include inpatient ICU and GIM coverage, including 1:6 to 1:9 call, supported by the MOCAP-paid internal medicine schedule.  Candidates will be expected to have active outpatient general internal medicine practices, and to interpret hospital based ECG, Holter and Exercise Stress tests.   Successful applicants will be invited to participate in teaching UBC medical students, Family Practice and Medicine residents.  Remuneration is excellent, and based on fee-for-service billings.

We look forward to receiving applications from qualified physicians who will make Comox their home, serve the needs of the GIM service and provide ICU coverage in our closed community ICU.
