Job Summary

St. Joseph’s General Hospital, and the Comox Valley are seeking a child and adolescent psychiatrist to join our team of two other child and adolescent psychiatrists, a psychiatric nurse counsellor, and youth mental health outreach worker. A new graduate would be well mentored by our experienced team.

This position would be a predominantly outpatient practice, with coverage of adolescents who are occasionally admitted to our inpatient unit, and younger children who on occasion are admitted to the pediatric unit.

The psychiatry department at St Joseph’s includes 11 psychiatrists (two C&A, two geriatric, five adult) and one GP psychiatrist. We are a very collegial group and organize regular CME events including a Journal Club.  In 2017 we are excited to be moving to a newly built regional hospital located in the Comox Valley.

The position includes consultation to GPs, paediatricians and to our local Child and Youth Mental Health team at the Ministry for Child and Family Development. The Comox Valley has a number of excellent services that support our psychiatric work with children including School District 71’s Behaviour Resource Program and Crisis Intervention Services through St Joseph’s Emergency Room.

Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the Province of British Columbia and be a Fellow of the RCPSC (or equivalent).

The expectation would be to join the psychiatry call group. On call demands are generally phone-based.

Opportunity exists to become involved in teaching UBC medical students and Family Practice residents.
