Job Summary

A well established 4 physician electrophysiology group, working within a 26 member division of Cardiology affiliated with both the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria, seek a fifth electrophysiologist to join the Vancouver Health Authority in Victoria, British Columbia.  This practice exists in a rich environment with learners ranging from medical students to electrophysiology fellows.

The successful candidate will be well trained and demonstrate competency in device based electrophysiology including implant, programming, and follow-up of cardiac implantable electronic devices including pacemakers, ICDs, and CRT devices.  Must also have training and knowledge of the management of EP patients including utilization of medications and procedures including ablation in order to participate in clinical EP patient management; however performance of EP procedures is not in the scope of this position.  Access to implants in the O.R and EP lab as well as in-clinic and remote device follow-up through the hospital based pacemaker clinic.  Participation in teaching and research expected as well as inpatient and outpatient EP consultative services.

The successful candidate will have obligations including coverage of both coronary care unit and cardiology wards in addition to responsibilities in electrophysiology.


Education, Training and Experience

FRCPC Cardiology
Full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC

In addition:

1. At least 3 years sub-specialist electrophysiology and devices training as part of cardiology training.
2. Clinical competence in advanced techniques relating to electrophysiology including atrial tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia ablation.
3. Clinical competence in advanced techniques in relation to implantable devices including lead extraction, subcutaneous ICD implantation.
4. PhD in a field relevant to cardiac electrophysiology, preferably having developed expertise in aspects of cellular electrophysiology relevant to inherited channelopathies.
5. Track record of attaining research grants as principal investigator.
6. Track record of innovation within research preferably having developed expertise in research methodologies which could be applied in collaboration between the department of electrophysiology at Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Biomedical Sciences department of the University of Victoria (e.g. cellular imaging techniques, models of disease, novel mapping technologies or ablation techniques).
7. Good publication record in fields relevant to the post including clinical electrophysiology and inherited arrhythmias with multiple publications of original research as first author.
8. Track record of international recognition for research quality – e.g. prizes at international conferences recognizing research achievements.
9. Desire for a job plan which includes at least 25% of time set aside for research and funded by the individual’s own research grants.
