Community Information

Vancouver Island’s second largest city, Nanaimo is situated midway on the east coast, 115 kilometers north of Victoria and is in close proximity to Vancouver.   The community offers a wide array of educational and cultural opportunities for families.  Recreational activities abound including year-round golf, spectacular winter skiing within one hour’s drive, and all manner of water sport activities.

If you seek balance between your personal and professional life in a location where the outdoor living is easy then we invite you to consider Nanaimo…the perfect climate for your future!

Job Summary

You will join 3 Geriatric Psychiatrists providing consultation to patients and their families/caregivers, primary care physicians and fellow health care professionals in Acute Inpatient (Psychiatry and Med/Surg at the hospital), Outpatient and Nursing Home settings in Nanaimo, Parksville, Ladysmith, Qualicum, Port Alberni and outlying communities.

You will provide leadership and clinical expertise to the SORT team - a community geriatric psychiatry outreach program.  Your complex patients will also have access to acute and rehabilitation programs in Victoria and Ladysmith as part of an innovative Island-wide Tertiary Geriatric Psychiatry program to ensure the highest quality of care. Further expansion of this program over the next few years will result in a dynamic system of care with Provincial linkages for service delivery planning and educational support.

There is also the opportunity to expand your practice interests by participating in consultation to remote areas on Vancouver Island through the NITAOP program. It is very rewarding to provide much-needed service for the special challenges of this population including First Nations issues. Geriatric psychiatry services are provided as part of Seniors Mental Health, which is now part of Seniors and Spiritual Health.  This program provides exceptional quality services through integration of resources and a strong focus on educational support of clinicians, physicians and other health care providers. You will participate in clinical service, teaching, and ongoing program development as part of the Island-wide Dementia Strategy.

Involvement in the Island Medical Program undergraduate and postgraduate teaching program is encouraged. A University of B.C. affiliated appointment and membership in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry is available.
