Baby Bed Program

The Baby Bed program is a safe sleep initiative that provides a bed for baby and care items to promote a healthy start in life.

The beds can be used until babies are up to four or five months old or when they begin to roll. Participating families are also connected to public health nurses and programs that support baby, mom and family.

How to get a Baby Bed

  • Women who are pregnant or parents with a new baby up to three months old are eligible for a free bed.
  • Watch the online baby care videos at babyboxuniversity.com to earn a certificate (select “British Columbia” syllabus).
  • A parent or guardian can present the certificate to their local public health unit to receive a free bed.  and meet with a Public Health Nurse.

We encourage all participants to register at rightfromthestart.viha.ca for pre- and post-natal services, breastfeeding support and connection with nurses.

What are the goals of the program?

  • Encourage an early connection between families and care providers to support a healthy pregnancy and infancy
  • Increase awareness and the practice of safe sleep
  • Provide a safe sleep surface for babies that can replace a bassinet or crib for the baby’s first four to five months (or can be used as a temporary bed)
  • Celebrate families and the birth of the new baby
