Your emotional and mental well-being is a key contributor to a healthy pregnancy. Although pregnancy can be a time of uncertainty and anxiety, there are ways you can decrease stress and create emotional and mental well-being.
For more information about the physical and emotional changes you are experiencing, see Mom’s Changes.
- Feeling alone can be very stressful. Build a support group of family, friends, and caregivers you can talk to.
- For extra support from people who are going through similar experiences, take a prenatal class or join a support group or online community.
- You and your baby deserve a safe and loving environment. Distance yourself from unsupportive, negative, or abusive partners, friends, or family.
- Feeling overwhelmed sometimes by stress or sadness or anger is common. If the feeling persists for more than a couple of weeks or you feel unable to handle it, talk to your midwife, doctor, or public health nurse.
- Physical activity helps your body release stress. Simply walking or stretching can help get rid of anxiety and tension.
- You don’t have to stop being yourself when you are pregnant. Take time away from “baby stuff” to continue doing the things you enjoy.
- As much as possible, acknowledge and prepare ahead of time for changes in your workplace, lifestyle, and personal relationships.
