Nutrition

Healthy eating habits begin when a child is very young. Between four and six months of age, your baby will be ready for solid foods. As he grows, your toddler will need a wider variety of nutritious foods and he will develop the motor skills to feed himself.
  • If you are breastfeeding, you can continue to do so for as long as you and your child want.
  • Introduce iron supplements or iron-fortified foods into your child’s diet when she is four to six months old.
  • Feed your child on cue. Your child knows when he is hungry and when he is full.
  • Give your child meals and snacks at regular times, but allow her to decide how much she will eat.
  • Limit the amount of juice your child drinks. Juice is full of natural and added sugars that can cause tooth decay. Too much juice can also make your child too full for other nutritious foods at snack and meal times.
  • Keep your toddler safe from choking by avoiding foods that pose choking hazards – nuts, hotdogs. While he eats, stay nearby and make sure he sits.
  • Letting your child learn to feed herself helps her develop independence and motor skills.
