Short of moving to an isolated island with no TV or Internet access, there is no way to shield your teenager’s healthy mind from a bombardment of daily media messages. The best thing you can do is teach her to think critically about the media she consumes.
- Teach your teen to consider the source of the information he takes in. Who is giving out the information? Who owns the radio station or television channel? What might be the goals and motives behind that web site or advertisement?
- Set guidelines with your teen for TV and movie viewing, as well as Internet use. Talk about your concerns regarding sexual imagery and violence. Share your teen’s interests in music, books, magazines, and web sites.
- Teach your teen to be ad savvy. Teens who understand marketing’s tricks and half-truths are less likely to be manipulated by advertising.
