Building Description
The Cedars is part of Dawson Heights which is a non-profit senior's housing complex set on lovely grounds, populated by Garry oaks, cedar trees, birds and a family of deer. We are a community of people from all faiths and backgrounds.
The Cedars was opened in 2003. It is a three-story, wood frame construction with 53 apartments in total.
Most of the apartments are one-bedroom with a few two-bed units. There are no studio units.
Building Amenities
Communal dining room; hair salon, recreation room, exercise bike, walking trail, kitchen for residents use, computer room, library, book magnifier, budgie & aquarium.
Neighbourhood /Community Amenities
Located in the municipality of Saanich, Dawson Heights is close to several shopping malls, churches, banks, a community centre, walk-in clinic and beautiful parkland.
Philosophy of Care
Our mission/purpose statement:
“To provide safe housing in a nurturing community for independent seniors on a limited income.”
Our focus is to support and encourage independence. When someone chooses to call The Cedars home any service that will support continued independence is welcomed and will be accommodated whenever possible. We are not however able to offer any medical/nursing services.
Type of Accommodation
The Cedars is a housing option providing supportive independent living for seniors aged 65 and over and has one or two bedroom suites. One bedroom units start at 510 square feet and the two bedroom units are 715 square feet. Each unit has its own kitchenette area equipped with a refrigerator. There are no cooking facilities in the apartments. Residents may bring their own microwaves.
Cost
Residents pay 70% of their after-tax income which covers: 1) monthly rental accommodation; 2) hospitality services: two meals and two snacks daily, weekly housekeeping, laundry, etc.; 3) personal care; and 4) on-site emergency response system. Residents on income assistance pay a flat rate. Items not included as a part of the monthly fee include: telephone, cable, hydro, personal laundry, household and toiletry supplies, medications, personal care products and insurance.
Special Recreational Opportunities
The Recreation department offers a variety of creative programs, addressing a wide range of interests and needs.
Social Programs: Outings, music groups, theatre productions, crafts, bingo, movie nights, Men's Group, birthday parties, morning coffee hour and afternoon tea.
Physical Programs: Exercise group, Tai Chi, walking group, gardening, croquet and bocci tournaments, Shuffleboard, cards and games nights.
Intellectual Programs: Quiz and Trivia games, Residents' meetings, travelogues, discussion groups, monthly newsletters, computer room with internet access, guest speakers and an on-site library.
Spiritual Programs: Weekly Time of Spirit, special services for religious holidays, hymn sings.
Programs are facilitated by a variety of people, including: Recreation and Music Therapists, residents, family members, and community members. All residents of Dawson Heights are welcome to participate in our recreational programming.
Outreach: Volunteer Opportunities, local community outreach projects, and global community outreach projects.
Accessibility
Common areas and suites are fully accessible using walkers and smaller motorized wheelchairs.
Motorized Scooter Policy
There is a scooter parking room. Outdoor scooters are not allowed in apartments. Our dining room can only accommodate a limited number of motorized transport equipment.
Pet Policy
Visiting pets are welcomed and encouraged however we do not allow pets to live in any of the apartments on campus.
Smoking Policy
A strict no smoking policy is in place in all of the housing options on campus. Smoking is allowed outside but must be at least 10 feet away from any opening, door or window, as per CRD policy.

Visiting Information
Building access is controlled by video and intercom. Entry to The Cedars is gained through an intercom entry system connected to each apartment.
