    Building Description

    Dufferin Place Residential care facility was built in the spring of 1987. The single storey building consists of three wings, each radiating from a central “L” shaped activity/dining area. Resident rooms consist of primarily four-bed rooms with a limited number of two and one-bed rooms. Special bathing facilities are included in each wing. The building is equipped with ceiling mounted lifts throughout.

    Dufferin Place is located on the same property as Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

    Type of Accommodation

    4 bed wards, semi-private and private rooms.


    Residents pay up to 80% of their after tax income which covers the cost of food and accommodation.

    Motorized Scooter Policy

    Electric wheelchairs can be accommodated. Larger motorized scooters are not permitted due to space limitations. 

    Pet Policy

    As per Island Health policy. Pets are encouraged to visit provided he/she is well behaved in a public place and on a leash at all times under the control of the owner. Pets are not allowed in the dining room during meal times. All visiting pets must be in good health and have an up to date vaccination record.

    Smoking Policy

    As per Island Health policy. Residents and visitors are not permitted to smoke on Island Health Property. 

    Safety/Security Features

    All exits are secured with key pad controls, regular fire inspections, maintained by VIHA security services.

    Facility-Specific Restrictions

    Residents over the age of 19, not a secure unit so not appropriate for those with an elopement risk.

    Visiting Information

    During influenza season (typically December-March), to help protect patients from the flu, all visitors will be expected to wear a mask in our facilities if they have not had a flu shot.     Note:  Provincial policy requires all visitors to be informed:  "Violence, foul language and abusive behaviours are not acceptable. Verbal threats or acts of violence will not be tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and/or prosecution."
