    Building Description

    Gorge Road Hospital, built in 1953, is located at 63 Gorge Road East. Residential services are provided on two floors, the WaterView Unit and the ArbutusView Unit, of the four storey building. The building is adjacent to the Gorge Waterway with the rear of the building facing the water. There is a paved walkway along the water-side of the building for residents to enjoy and walk along.

    Building Amenities

    Each floor has a secured garden/patio area equipped with patio furniture and a BBQ.  There are sheltered areas on the patios. Both floors have resident lounges.

    We do have a hair dresser who operates on both units, Mondays on WaterView and Tuesdays on ArbutusView.

    Neighbourhood/Community Amenities

    The facility is located in the Gorge neighbourhood and is close Tillicum and Mayfair Malls, Fairway Market and many small restaurants and pubs. There are some small hotels in the neighbourhood as well.

    Type of Accommodation

    There are two units at the facility which provide service for complex care clientele:

    - ArbutusView Unit has 53 complex care beds and 1 respite bed. There are 4 bed wards on this unit.

    - WaterView Unit has 55 complex care beds and 2 respite beds. There are semi-private and 4 bed wards here.

    Each Unit has some private rooms which are assigned based on care requirements.


    Residents pay up to 80% of their after-tax income which covers the cost of food and accommodation.

    Special Recreational Opportunities

    There is a Recreation Therapy coordinator as well as rehabilitation assistants who organize daily activities, monthly birthday parties, bus outings, music entertainment as well as seasonal events. The facility employs 2 recreation therapists and rehabilitation assistants. Activities are offered during the weekdays.


    The facility is fully accessible for clients who require mobility devices (e.g. walkers, wheelchairs, power chairs and scooters).

    There is an elevator that provides transport between the two floors.

    Motorized Scooter Policy

    Scooters are permitted so long as the resident is able to safely operate this power device. 

    Pet Policy

    As per Island Health policy. Pets are permitted to visit.

    Smoking Policy

    As per Island Health policy. Smoking is permitted outdoors in designated areas.

    Safety/Security Features

    ArbutusView Unit has double secure locking doors into the unit. The patio is also a secured environment.
    WaterView Unit has one secured doorway into the unit. There is also a large patio with a secured gate. Close circuit cameras are in place at the entrance as well as the garden patio on WaterView Unit.

    Facility-Specific Restrictions

    Bariatric clientele cannot have their needs adequately met at this site secondary to the lack of overhead lifts.
