Building Description

Located in Nanaimo with a beautiful view of the harbour and Georgia Strait. Malaspina Gardens sits on spacious grounds above the city and has 135 suites within its two buildings. Visitor parking is available on the property.

Building Amenities

The building features many amenities including television lounges, dining rooms, an activity room with kitchen facilities, games area and hair salon. There are three wheelchair accessible garden patios for our residents’ outdoor enjoyment.

Neighbourhood /Community Amenities

Near downtown Nanaimo, close to shopping, Bowen Park Seniors Centre, Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, medical clinics, local churches, and bus routes.

Type of Accommodation

Main builing has 69 single occupancy suites with bedroom and two piece bathroom.

Franklyn Building has a combination of suites:

  • 34 single occupancy suites with bedroom and two piece bathroom
  • 16 double occupancy rooms with shared washroom facilities

Therapeutic bathing facilities are located on each unit.

Cost

Residents pay up to 80% of their after-tax income which covers the cost of food and accommodation.

Special Recreational Opportunities

Therapeutic and recreational services include social gardening club, walking programs, strength & balance classes, bus outings to local areas of interest, bingo, games, arts & crafts, and baking. We liaise with our community partners to provide art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy, therapy dog visits, and musical entertainment.  Many denominations visit to provide religious services each month.

Wheelchair accessibility to all common areas and most individual suites. 

Motorized Scooter Policy

Scooters must be parked in the “link” throughway between buildings.

Pet Policy

Frankie is Malaspina's resident cat. Trained therapy dogs visit regularly. Family pet visits are welcome, but must adhere to facility policy for the safety of residents and staff.

Smoking Policy

There is a designated outdoor smoking area for resident use. All others are not permitted to smoke on the property.

Safety/Security Features

All exits and stairwells are secured with a key pad entry system. The fire alarm and sprinkler systems are monitored for the safety of all.

Visiting Information

During influenza season (typically December-March), to help protect patients from the flu, all visitors will be expected to wear a mask in our facilities if they have not had a flu shot. For more information, please read our Frequently Asked Questions (PDF) and Influenza Protection Policy (PDF).
