Adult Day Programs

Adult day programs are community-based services that aim to enhance health and quality of life for seniors and people with disabilities.  The Vancouver Island Health Authority offers a variety of adult day programs, including adult day centres, overnight facility stays and community bathing programs.  We also support community agencies providing outreach and volunteer services.

Adult Day Centers

These centres provide opportunities to get out and keep in touch with other people in the community.  You can join in the exercise programs, community outings, arts and crafts, discussion groups, information programs, or talk to health professionals about issues that concern you.  Adult Day Centres also give your family members a chance to rest or run errands.

You are welcome to attend adult day centres if you qualify for the health authority's long-term care services.  Some centres also accept private clients or those referred from the community.

Overnight Facility Stays (South Island)

After attending day centre activities, you can stay overnight at the facility then enjoy another full day at the centre before returning home.  Overnight facility stays can provide much needed breaks for your family members.  To be eligible for overnight facility stays, you must be referred through the health authority's long-term care program and attend day centre activities regularly.  Overnight facility stays are only available at certain Adult Day Centres.

Community Bathing Programs

If you are extremely weak or have physical disabilities and find it difficult to bath safely in your own home, you may benefit from community bathing programs. For a small fee, you can bathe in specially equipped bathtubs, with the assistance of trained staff, at several facilities in the Vancouver Island Health Authority region. Community bathing programs are open to anyone having difficulty bathing safely at home.
