An echocardiogram is a diagnostic test which uses ultrasound (high frequency sound waves) to form a picture of heart valves and heart muscle. These sound waves are sent through a transducer (a sound sensitive instrument) which changes the sound waves into an image on a TV-like monitor so the cardiologist can study it.)
An "echo" provides information about heart valves, heart muscle, and blood flow inside the heart. An echogram takes approximately 45-60 minutes.
