For Seniors and People with Disabilities
Residential care facilities provide 24-hour professional care and supervision for people who have complex health needs. Staff members administer medications and assist residents with daily activities such as eating, bathing and dressing.
You may qualify if you meet citizenship and provincial residency requirements and the criteria for admission to one of VIHA's residential care facilities. VIHA staff will determine your eligibility by conducting a thorough, standardized assessment of your need and urgency for residential care.
You are charged a daily rate based on your level of income. This covers the cost of accommodation, basic supplies and equipment, meals, most medications, activities and care. Services and charges may vary between settings. Some facilities charge additional fees for items such as private rooms, activities and hairdressing services. Facility staff will inform you about these fees before you move in.
Your preferences are always taken into account. However, a space may not be available in your preferred facility when placement is required. If you are unhappy about your initial placement, you can request a transfer to another facility locally or anywhere in BC.
There are a wide variety of publicly and privately funded community resources available to help you live independently. Some examples include home support services, bathing services and assisted living units.
The health authority does not maintain waitlists for people who may need residential care at a future time. Instead, residential facility placements are based on urgent need. This ensures that beds are available for the people who have the greatest need for 24-hour care.
