Mendeley is a Reference Management application. Reference managers (also called citation managers or bibliographic management software) offer a way to save, organize and manage references. Many of these work with word processing software to format in-text citations and bibliographies for papers and theses, allow you to share references, and enable you to attach or link PDFs to a citation record.
Mendeley is the only free Reference Manager software that is allowed to be loaded on Island Health pc’s.
How to Get Started with Mendeley
1. Register for an Account
You will need an account to use Mendeley. (Your Mendeley account can be used both on your work and personal devices)
2. Download Mendeley Desktop onto both your home and work pc’s. (see instructions below on how to have MENDELEY installed on your ISLAND HEALTH pc at NO COST to your Department)
Use the Mendeley Desktop to build and organize your collection of references and documents, which you can sync with the web and mobile versions. Drag & drop PDF files into the Desktop to instantly create references. Annotate PDFs with highlights and sticky notes as you read them.
3. Install the Mendeley Web Importer (Adding the Web Importer to your favorite web browser makes it easy to import references and documents from academic databases.)
4. Install the Citation Plugin
The plugin allows you to insert citations and bibliographies into your Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or BibTeX document. Look for the Install link in the Tools menu of Mendeley Desktop.
