Soup-er Meals

The Soup-er Meals program is funded and administered by Residential and Housing Services.  It provides vocational training and wholesome affordable frozen meals to enable individuals to live as independently as possible.

Services Provided

This program is a multi-level course offering vocational training in the food service industry. 

Participants work closely with a chef- instructor to prepare meals and participate in the operation of the Soup-er Meals Frozen Meal Program. 

Upon completing the program successful students will be eligible for works as dishwashers, prep cooks or kitchen assistants.

Participants must also be willing to commit approximately 8 hours per week for at least 6 months.

Level 1 – Soup Preparation

Duration:  approx 3 months
Group size:  max 5
Times:  4 hours per class, twice a week
Content:

    • Food safety
    • Basic cooking skills
    • Work ethics
    • Customer service

Level 2 – Prep Cook/Meal Preparation

Duration:  3-12 months
Group size:  max 4
Times:  4 hours per class, twice a week
Content:

    • In-depth knowledge of professional kitchen practices
    • Wider range of cooking skills
    • Sales and customer service

From this level, participants will be referred to an outside organization where they will work with a vocational planner to find a placement in the work force. 

Select students will be offered a part-time work experience position with Soup-er Meals, lasting no longer than six months.

Hours: Tuesday-Friday 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Access Services

  • Individuals can self-refer by dropping by the above address and filling out an application form.
  • Individuals must be formally connected with the mental health system to be eligible.

Services Provided

  • Provides a wide range of wholesome frozen meals, soups and baked goods at reasonable prices. 
  • Ingredients lists are available for customers with dietary restrictions and vegetarian and diabetic meals are also on the menu.
  • Meals are subsidized by VIHA's Mental Health and Addiction Services and are available for purchase by clients of the mental health system.
