The Vancouver Island Health Authority provides information and advice on evaluating and improving indoor air quality. As well, we promote public awareness of outdoor air quality issues and support initiatives to evaluate and control air pollution sources.
Air quality is an important public health issue. Pollutants in the air can cause diseases such as:
-
influenza,
-
asthma,
-
cardio-vascular disease,
-
cancers and
-
poisonings.
A successful air-quality program depends on health authorities, all levels of government, and community partners working together and sharing accountability. Under the Core Public Health Functions Framework, BC’s health authorities and the Ministry of Health have developed a Model Core Program Paper for Air Quality. VIHA is using this evidence-based paper to identify opportunities for improving air quality.
Vehicles and Idling
Automobile emissions are a major contributor to air pollution. In the Capital Regional District (CRD), a bylaw restricting vehicle idling was adopted in April 2009 for the protection of public health and to address health concerns due to visible sources of pollution.
For the first year of the bylaw, no enforcement penalties are being implemented. The CRD is working with VIHA’s Health Protection and Environmental Services department on a public awareness campaign.
