Food Security

Food security means having access to safe, culturally acceptable, and nutritional food. The principles of food security are sustainability, self-reliance and social justice. A sustainable community food system improves the health of the community, environment and individuals over time. It is collaborative effort to build locally based, self-reliant food systems and economies.

The Food Security Program at the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) aims to improve the health of residents and reduce health inequities. There are many VIHA programs that share these goals, and provide leadership for food security, including: Public Health, Child Youth and Family Community Health, Aboriginal Health, Nutrition Services and Mental Health.
