Smoke-free Home

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME SMOKE-FREE

Talk about it!

  • Sit down with everyone living in your home and discuss ways to make your home smoke-free and the dangers of second-hand smoke. To enter a forum open to anyone and everyone to exchange info about keeping your home and family smoke-free, check out www.smokefreekids.com
  • If you live with a smoker, be supportive of efforts to quit but be firm about your own right to live in a smoke-free home.
  • Discuss the fact that you're rejecting the smoke not the smoker.
  • Enlist the help of QuitNow by phone at 1-877-455-2233 or at the website www.quitnow.ca if a smoker is thinking of quitting.

Get Ready!

  • Make a rule to never smoke in your home, even in the basement, the bathroom, by an open window, or even across the room from a child. If you have to smoke...take it outside.
  • Set up a smoking area outside.
  • Remove any ashtrays from inside the home.
  • Display a Smoke Free Places for Kids window decal and fridge magnet from the Tobacco Control Program or have your children make their own sign.
  • Think about the smokers who will visit your home and practice how you will ask them to smoke outside.

Go!

  • Be polite, but firm.
  • Say "thank you" to your friends for helping you keep your home smoke-free.
  • If no one can watch your children, take them with you for a walk while you smoke.
