Contracts and Compensation

In addition to physician services funded through British Columbia's fee-for service system, some physician services are provided under contracts which are administered and paid through Island Health.

Physician Contracts are responsible for the administration of contracts that Island Health holds with physicians.     

Physician Compensation is responsible for processing all non fee-for-service payments to Physicians at Island Health.

Contract Process

A contract between Island Health and a physician will begin in one of two ways:

1. A physician or physician group may contact a program area with a service proposal; or
2. A program area may identify need for a service and seek out a physician or physician group.

After the need for a service has been indicated, a funding source is identified and the terms of service are negotiated.  When services and compensation for those services are agreed to, a contract is drafted and signed by the parties.  If the contract is to be renewed, Island Health will send out a notice of its intent to renew.
