Credentialing and Privileging

We are the resource for medical staff credentialing and privileging across Island Health.

Each physician, midwife and dentist must receive an appointment to the Island Health medical staff prior to practicing in our facilities or community services. The process of appointment is called "credentialing and privileging." We are organized by region, with coordinators in each of three Health Service Delivery Areas:  North, Central and South Island.

Credentialing and Privileging coordinates new applications for privileges, annual reviews, and changes to privileges as governed by Island Health's Medical Staff Bylaws and Medical Staff Rules.

Credentialing and Privileging is also responsible for maintaining a medical staff database, initiating systems service requests for medical staff, and conveying information on changes to medical staff privileges.

Requesting Medical Staff Privileges


Physicians, midwives, and dentists in good standing with their respective college may be considered for medical staff appointment. If you are interested in applying for privileges, please contact Credentialing_Office@viha.ca

Applying for Changes to Privileges


If you are aware of upcoming changes to your medical staff privileges, please inform a member of the Credentialing Office as soon as possible. Medical staff are required to provide at least 60 days notice for substantial changes to privileges that potentially impact inpatient care, such as:

  • Changes to department or divisions
  • Changes to procedural privileges
  • Leaves of absence for six weeks or more (medical, educational, other)
  • Relinquishment of privileges
  • Retirement

Annual Reappointment Process


Medical Staff are required to participate in an annual reappointment process to confirm hospital privileges. The reappointment package is developed provincially along with input from Department Heads and the Island Health Medical Planning & Credentialing Committee.
