Expressions of Interest for Chair & Vice-Chair of the HAMAC

The Nominations Committee would like to invite expressions of interest for the roles of Chair and Vice-Chair of the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC). These roles are open to any active medical staff member of Island Health.


The Board of the Directors appoints a Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC). The purpose and functions of this committee can be found in Section 8 of the Medical Staff Bylaws. In part, it makes recommendations to the Board of Directors with respect to cancellation, suspension, restriction, non-renewal, or maintenance of the privileges of all members of the medical staff to practice within the facilities and programs operated by the Island Health. In addition, it provides advice to the Board of Directors and to the CEO on the provision of medical care within the facilities and programs operated by Island Health, on the monitoring of the quality and effectiveness of medical care provided within the facilities and programs operated by the Island Health, on the adequacy of medical staff resources, on the continuing education of the members of the medical staff and on planning goals for meeting the medical care needs of the population served by the Island Health .

The Chair and Vice-Chair of the HAMAC are appointed by the Board of Directors after considering the recommendation of the HAMAC. The Chair may be selected from among the active members of the medical staff, the appointment being for a term of not more than three years, although reappointment may occur for up to three consecutive terms (maximum 9 years consecutively).

The Chair or Vice-Chair of HAMAC shall provide a report to the Board of Directors and to the CEO on a regular basis. The Chair or Vice-Chair of HAMAC shall attend meetings of the Board of Directors, and the appropriate committee of the Board, to participate in discussion pertaining to the purposes identified for the HAMAC within the Bylaws and Medical staff Rules.

Expressions of interest can be sent to Sharon.Fennell@viha.ca by Monday, November 30th for consideration by the nomination committee.

Deliberations from the committee will go forward to the Board of Directors for consideration.
