The authority for medical staff flows from the Board of Directors through the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC) to Regional Department Heads, and onward through a network of Site Chiefs, Division Heads and local Chiefs of Staff. Members of the medical staff are accountable to the head of the department to which they are assigned. Island Health's departments are defined in the Medical Staff Rules, Section 14.3, and include the following:

Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC)
The Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee is known by its acronym, HAMAC, and provides advice to the Island Health Board of Directors and to the CEO on:
The provision of medical care within the facilities and programs operated by Vancouver Island Health Authority.
The monitoring of quality and effectiveness of medical care provided within the facilities and programs operated by Vancouver Island Health Authority.
The adequacy of medical staff resources.
The continuing education of the members of the medical staff.
Planning goals for meeting the medical care needs of the population served by Vancouver Island Health Authority.
The availability and adequacy of resources to provide appropriate patient care at Vancouver Island Health Authority.
The HAMAC makes recommendations to the Board of Directors with respect to cancellation, suspension, restriction, non-renewal or maintenance of the appointments and privileges of all members of the medical staff to practice within the facilities and programs operated by Vancouver Island Health Authority.

(Local) Medical Advisory Committees
These committees are also known by their acronym, MAC or LMAC. Local medical advisory committees monitor the quality of medical care in a geographic area or designated site(s). Members are appointed by HAMAC; and, in turn, the MAC makes recommendations to the HAMAC. MAC duties include:
Quality assurance and quality improvement.
Dissemination of information to medical staff at local sites.
Assessing medical staff resources for their geographic area.
Collaboration with HAMAC to deal with site issues under HAMAC jurisdiction.
Collaboration with HAMAC regarding approval of privileges.
