South Island Nutrition Program

Program Purpose

Community Nutritionists work to promote optimal nutrition and health for children and families living across the Island Health region.




  • Work with community groups to promote healthy eating, physical activity and positive body image 
  • Work with the community to advocate for and promote access to affordable nutritious food
  • Provide nutrition expertise to Public Health Nurses and other health professionals
  • Develop and provide resources (kits, games, print materials) for schools, preschools, community groups and families
  • Provide nutrition expertise and support in the implementation of food and nutrition policies and programs in the schools and school districts
  • Provide nutrition support and services to healthy baby groups
  • Provide nutrition workshops for families, educators and other professionals
  • Offer limited telephone counselling on common nutrition and feeding issues for children and families
  • Refer people who need one-to-one counselling to the appropriate services
  • Work with Best Babies programs to support pregnant women and new moms and their babies
