Student Practice

This web page is for educational programs that are interested in placing students in a Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) facility.

VIHA recognizes the importance of students and continuous learning. Our goal is to provide a broad scope of learning opportunities, in collaboration with our academic partners, for students and practitioners from all healthcare disciplines.

General Guidelines

Students:

  • All requests must originate from the educational program. Please do not contact a unit or staff member directly about placements opportunities.
  • If you are looking for employment, please go to  VI-Hire.

Educational Programs:

  • VIHA uses HSPnet (Health Science Placement Network) to coordinate and manage requests for clinical placements.
  • If your program is from out of area or is not yet using HSPnet, please contact one of our VIHA HSPnet Coordinators (see contact infromation in sidebar).

Before making a student placement request

There are 3 requirements that must be met before a request for placement can be made. These requirements include:

  1. Affilitation Agreement
  2. Capacity of area to accept students
  3. Appropriateness of the student placement request

Once these requirements are met, VIHA electronically sends a Placement Request Package to the educational program explaining how to make a formal student placement request. A minimum of 3 months notice is required prior to the requested placement start date.

Before the student arrives

Once the student placement is confirmed, the following additional reqirements must be met. It is the educational program's responsibility  to assist students to meet these requirements and to retain documented proof that they have been met.  Please do not forward any of this documentation unless VIHA specifically requests it.

1. Pre-placement Practice Education Guidelines (PEG) requirements:

2. VIHA specific requirements

VIHA electronically sends information to the educational program outlining the process for meeting VIHA specific requirements. These may include:

    • Photo identification
    • Parking & transportation options
    • Electronic Health Record access
    • Bedside Blood Glucose Monitoring
