Regional Support Program

The Regional Support Program seeks to engage and support Vancouver Island General Practitioners through:

  • Physician Forums
  • Practice Support Program

Physician Forums

Physician Forums are Island Health sponsored events where Specialist speakers present on topics relevant to general practice, including chronic disease.

These Forums provide local GPs and their office staff an opportunity to come together in protected time to learn about a particular area of medicine and discuss how to incorporate that information into their office practice.

Forums can vary in length, but generally run to a maximum of 3.5 hours. Physicians and their staff are paid to attend and Continuing Professional Development Credits are available through Island Health.

The main objectives of these forums are:

  1. To help build local GP/Specialist relationships,
  2. To provide GPs and their office staff with protected time to discuss and plan how to incorporate information (clinical and/or office flow), and
  3. To provide GPs and their office staff with information on available Island Health or community services.

Practice Support Program (PSP)

The Practice Support Program (PSP) is a joint initiative of the BC Medical Association, the BC Ministry of Health and Health Authorities.  The PSP was developed to support primary care clinical practices in office redesign through learning modules.

Modules currently offered include Advanced Access, End-of-Life, Group Medical Visits, COPD/Shared Care, Child and Youth Mental Health and Adult Mental Health.

The Regional Support Program Team delivers the PSP program across Vancouver Island. These staff facilitate learning sessions and provide ongoing support to clinical practices involved in PSP modules.
