Antibiotic resistance is one of the world's most urgent public health threats and Island Health is doing its part to help this global problem.
Inappropriate use of antimicrobial drugs leads to the emergence of resistant bacteria and increases risks to patients from drug interactions and infections with Clostridium difficile or other antibiotic-resistant organisms. It also contributes to unnecessary costs in the health-care system.
Accreditation Canada recognized the importance of this fact and included antimicrobial stewardship as a Required Organization Practice (ROP) in their accreditation standards. Island Health was one of the first health authorities to create a funded antimicrobial stewardship program.
The goal of Island Health's antimicrobial stewardship program is to provide leadership, guidance and support to clinicians for the safe and effective use of antimicrobial agents.
