System Quality and Patient Safety

Patient safety is a basic goal and underpins the work we do. The System Quality and Patient Safety Program provides support to all programs in quality and patient safety activities across the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA).

Improving the safety of patients is about creating an environment that is open, honest, respectful and non-blaming. We believe in putting patients at the centre of improvement efforts and involving interdisciplinary teams to ensure best practices are implemented and shared across departments.

Our partners include:

  • VIHA Patient Advisory Council: a diverse group of former patients who meet regularly to advise VIHA on how we can provide better patient-centered care. Read more about their work

  • The BC Patient Safety Quality Council brings a provincial perspective to patient safety and quality improvement activities. Through collaborative partnerships the Council promotes and informs a provincially coordinated, patient-centered approach to patient safety and quality improvement. http://www.bcpsqc.ca/

  • The Canadian Patient Safety Institute is a national committee focused on a coordinated strategy to improve patient safety for Canadians. Key initiatives to improve care have been incorporated into our programs. Visit their site for more about these initiatives: http://www.patientsafetyinstitute.ca/English/Pages/default.aspx
